Pre-conference studio tours
“Gain” attendees are invited to enhance their conference experience by visiting one of New York City’s most exciting design studios and showrooms. Each destination will include a studio tour and a brief presentation about current projects that demonstrate the interrelationship between great design and business success. Don’t miss this opportunity to engage in dialogues with design and business leaders over a glass of wine as a prelude to Gain: AIGA Business and Design Conference.

The tours are offered from 4:00–6:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 26. Attendees can select one of the tours listed below. Space for each studio is limited, so we encourage you to register early.

Registration fee is $45.

Studio tours include:

frog design
Participants in this tour will meet with strategists and creatives from frog to learn about the company's latest endevors and discuss the concept of "Business Design." The Business Design procedure is design innovation turned towards an entirely new category of problems: the fundamental challenges of growth in a dynamic world. By approaching every aspect of an organization with a critical and creative eye, frog's business solutions don't just solve the problem at hand, they foster evolution.

Lippincott Mercer
A visit to the Park Avenue studio of global brand strategy and design consultancy Lippincott Mercer. Participants will tour the workspace, hear and experience first hand the firms new strategies and approaches to the design of sensory identity systems. Recent work for Sprint, Hyatt, Infiniti and others will be shared in an informal discussion with the the senior creative partners at Lippincott, Connie Birdsall, Rodney Abbot, Brendan Murphy and Su Mathews.

Marc Ecko Enterprises
Join this behind the scenes tour of Marc Ecko Enterprises to learn more about the company responsible for several of today's most successful fashion and youth lifestyle brands. Participants will visit the various showrooms and design labs, as well as meet staff members from *ecko unltd., G-Unit Clothing Company, Complex Magazine, Zoo York, Marc Ecko Cut & Sew, Avirex, Ecko Gaming. The tour finale will be a visit to Sweat Equity Enterprises (SEE), an innovative new non profit learning program and microenterprise where underserved New York City teens gain professional design and entrepreneurship training to prepare them for college and career.

Participants in this tour will meet with representatives from the in-house On Air Design and Off Air Creative teams to learn first hand about current projects and new initiatives. These teams are responsible for developing innovative, strategic and compelling creative work that includes advertising, channel branding, show packaging, apparel, logos and art breaks for multiple MTV channels; mtv, mtv2, mtvU, mtv World, mtv Digital Suite and mtvMobile.

A studio visit to the New York office of Pentagram, the international design firm that specializes in different areas of graphic design, industrial design and architecture, will include a preview of the firm’s work for the new Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, WI. James Biber, Michael Bierut and Abbott Miller will discuss the challenges of explaining a brand that embodies the “if we have to explain you wouldn’t understand” approach to marketing.

Rockwell Group
A studio visit to Rockwell Group, a cross disciplinary architecture and design firm, specializing in retail, hospitality, cultural, theater and film design, will include discussion of Forth & Towne, Gap’s newest retail brand; Jet Blue’s New Terminal 5; our branding and interactive design work for The Coca-Cola Company; a new store prototype for Mikasa including the design of over 100 products to be introduced this Fall and more!
