These name badge pouches are made with a material called EVA rather than PVC. EVA is a material that is preferred by Aveda, to be used as a substitute for PVC, for their packaging. These name badge pouches also come with a cotton cord.
Vinyl is commonly used as a shorthand name for polyvinyl chloride (PVC). In technical terms however, vinyl encompasses a range of thermoplastic chemical compounds derived from ethylene, which includes ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA). What differentiates PVC from EVA is the addition of a chlorine molecule. Chlorine is the source of many environmental health concerns with PVC, such as the generation of dioxin which is a highly carcinogenic chemical produced in both the manufacture and disposal of PVC. Due to its persistent and bio-accumulative nature—it travels long distances without breaking down and concentrates as it moves up the food chain to humans—dioxin has become a global problem.
Like other non-chlorinated vinyls, EVA has been used as a chlorine-free substitute for PVC. But absence of chlorine alone does not make EVA the final answer in the search for green polymers. There are still plenty of toxic challenges and untested chemicals in the life cycle of any petrochemical product. But for PVC substitutes like EVA evidence indicates that the absence of chlorine in the formula will generally render the lifecycle environmental health impacts less harmful than PVC. And studies have also shown that these substitutes are readily biodegraded by either anaerobic or aerobic mechanisms, and bioaccumulation—the increase in chemical concentration under steady state conditions in an organism relative to its environmental concentration—is unlikely.
** Milagros typically creates larger orders only (2,500 or more). So, if you have a small order, this may not be an option.
